Religion Influences Fashion

The weather is warming, flowers are blooming, it must be time for The MET Gala. Lets admire the eccentric and thematic looks!

The MET Gala: Religion Influences Fashion

With Rihanna, Amal Clooney and Donatella Versace honorary co-chairs for the evening, the bar was set high and our favorite celebrities did not disappoint. With so many fabulous looks to highlight, we will start with those that took the theme to heart. You know ladies like Rihanna, Sarah Jessica Parker and Katy Perry.

Rihanna nailed the carpet in a short, embellished Maison Margiela gown and oversized coat while sporting her own bejeweled mitre, AKA the Pope’s tall, peaked hat. Sarah Jessica Parker’s return to the MET was grand indeed, she donned an embroidered gold Dolce and Gabbana gown and a nativity scene headdress. Miss Katy Perry, rocked feathered and bejeweled angel wings designed by Versace.

But this year, we saw even more woman and a few men get in on the action and really take on religious influenced looks. Kate Bosworth went the Virgin Mary route in her Oscar de la Renta gown and veil. Both Zendaya and Shailene Woodley chose a Joan of Arc look, wearing Versace and Ralph Lauren respectively. Chadwick Boseman continued his reign of the red carpet in a Versace designed three piece suit complete with floor-length cape and gold cross embellishments. Then there was theatre owner and producer Jordan Roth sporting a Givenchy Haute Couture cardinal inspired red full-length jacket and pants. We’d be remiss not to mention the impeccably dressed, Lena Waithe who donned a Carolina Herrera suit and rainbow cape in honor the LGBTQ community.

As for the trends of the evening, red and gold were the colors of the night with black and white making a good showing. Headdresses, tiaras, crowns and veils were highly popular accessories with most gowns and suits either embroidered or bejeweled. The MET gala is always fashions biggest night and the attendees certainly proved that. Now, look for our second MET gala article to check out the looks that screamed elegance with a hint of the theme.

Prince's Legacy Live On

Purple Reigns!

No longer THE color for royalty and those of immense wealth, purple is for everyone!

It is not surprising in the least that ultra violet is the Pantone color of 2018. What better hue to take down millennial pink but the color synonymous with one of the greatest musicians of all time, Prince. It was inevitable the fashion industry was going to be inspired yet again by Prince and his unique style. His legacy will live on not only through music but fashion as well.

Prince aside, the hue had a big showing on the fall 2016 runways and has yet to fully drop off. Purple has continued to make its presence known, lavender is a spring 2018 color trend after all. Lilac, deep plums, mauves, and magenta all graced recent runways. We are barely halfway through the year, who knows how significant purple will become. We are looking forward to seeing how this color story plays out.

Wondering how purple went from THE color of royalty and the wealthy to a mass marketed one. Well, we have you covered. Purple dye was made from the mucus of sea snails found only on the coast of the Phoenician trading city of Tyre (now known as Lebanon). The amount of work that went into creating the fabric was massive, making it outrageously expensive. Then one fine day in 1856, 18 year old chemist, William Henry Perkin was fiddling around in his room, trying to create synthetic quinine, which was used to combat Malaria. Instead he created synthetic purple. He soon patented and manufactured the dye, making purple available to all.
