Rogan Gregory

"I want to live some day in swim trunks and surf shorts. I would rather not wear any clothes."

Eco friendly designer Rogan Gregory was born in 1972 in Colorado but grew up in Kent, Ohio. He spent his childhood playing in the woods and mountains near his home, gaining a respect for the environment early on. After receiving a degree in creative writing, Gregory moved to New York City in 1994 and a year later found himself interning at Tommy Hilfiger. Following his internship was employment at Calvin Klein, Daryl K and the Gap. In 2001, Gregory launched his first label, ‘Rogan’; a line of sharply tailored denim. Women and buyers immediately started clamoring for his designs, which quickly landed on the shelves of specialty boutiques along with high end department stores such as Barneys, Nordstrom and Fred Segal.

In 2004 Rogan Gregory and Scott Mackinlay Hahn established his second label, ‘Loomstate’; a casual brand which uses 100% certified organic cotton and as Gregory told MyCloset.com is less PC, more relaxed than and not as serious as its older brother, the brand ‘Rogan’. Again, he is an instant success, even gaining the attention of U2 front man Bono and his wife Ali Hewson. By 2005, Gregory, along with Bono and Hewson, launched the label ‘Edun’. With a desire to bring trade instead of aid to developing countries by helping them create sustainable employment, the three partners chose to open production sites in Tunisia, Peru and India. A year later, in 2006 Gregory launched a line of handmade bespoke industrial style seating, tables and lighting called ‘Rogan Objects’. He uses recycled materials, hand-blown glass, flat bar steel, reclaimed woods and buffalo hides. In April of 2008, Gregory opened his first ever store in New York City, called ‘Rogan’. A month later he unveiled his line of organic women’s swim and casual wear for Target’s GO International designer series. Thanks to his numerous accomplishments and three successful labels, Rogan Gregory was awarded with the 2008 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award.

Life Facts:
Rogan Gregory is an environmentalist through and through, even discouraging the washing of jeans. Gregory’s label ‘Edun’ was given a nine page story in the March 2005 issue of Vogue, even though those pages are normally reserved for showcasing advertisers. In an effort to keep ‘Loomstate’ socially conscious Gregory and Hahn manage all stages of manufacturing from fabric mills to cut and sewing facilities
