EMERGING DESIGNER

Larissa Eakin Haisten

Larissa started her career when she was hired as and assistant patternmaker for a cutting and sewing contractor in lower Alabama. There she learned everything about garment production and front of the house and back of the house operations. Larissa wanted to get back to Atlanta and got an opportunity of a lifetime working as a CAD instructor for a French CAD/CAM company serving the sewn products industry. She did that for several wonderful years and then went on her own as a consultant and freelance CAD instructor. Larissa tired of being the product for sale (her knowledge and willingness to share it) and wanted out. She took a two year hiatus and went into telecom.

While working as a fiber optic transmission equipment instructor, Larissa had an idea for a better bra. She was part of a mass layoff and that freed her to pursue her bra idea. Larissa taught herself patternmaking and sewing and applied [that knowledge] to her bra. From that bra came the entire Laramar 7 clothing line that expanded with tankinis, one pieces, bikini bottoms, shirts, shorts, skirts and pants and lined fitted jackets. Larissa combined her design, patternmaking and sewing skills with her knowledge of garment production and retail sales and has logged in 15 years experience in the apparel industry- 5 years in retail, 5 years in garment production and 5 years as a consultant and clothing design entreprenuer. Laramar 7 is the result of effort, time and money meeting knowledge, skill and experience. A healthy dose of luck, love, faith and good fortune also helps.

Larissa Eakin Haisten on Fashion

What has been your biggest fashion faux-pas?
I would say trying to be trendy like everyone else. I once had my hair cut into this assymetrical cut.
If you could only shop at one store, which would it be?
Benetton. It's what I usually wear when I'm not wearing my own designs. I'm wearing it now!
Survival of the fittest: What is one item in your closet that you will never get rid of?
My gold leopard print jacket. I bought it for $20 when I was in college from this store run by the stylist of the B-52's. Once the stylist saw it, he offered me $40 not to buy it. I refused of course! It's an awesome wool jacket.
If you were given the opportunity to have a famous designer revamp your entire wardrobe, who would you choose?
Nanette Lepore. She makes beautiful, creative, whimsical feminine clothing that I adore.
If you had to describe your personal style in one word, what would it be?
Practical chic.

MyCloset.com Speaks

Laramar 7 truly delivers. The pieces can absolutely go from gym to street or more. It is refreshing to see clothes that can totally transform function by the mere changing of a shoe, or adding accessories. Genius!
