EMERGING DESIGNER

Ayesha Ibrahim

Ayesha Ibrahim on Fashion

What has been your biggest fashion faux-pas?
This question takes me back to the days of my early 20s. I was going to a party and I decided to make a dress by hand, it took me weeks but I was determined to wear something I made myself. I wore it and I felt beautiful and quite proud of my piece which I made ENTIRELY by hand. Now, years later as a fashion designer, I look at that same dress (which I have held on to), and I can see every mistake made with regards to cut and construction and even its technical design but at the same time I can look at that dress and see how much I have grown from then till now and I also see that what has stayed consistent is my passion for fashion design.
If you could only shop at one store, which would it be?
If I could shop at one store it would have to be a one-of-a kind variety store. I love antique, funky pieces and that goes not only for my wardrobe and jewelry but also my household items. Therefore, my dream shop would have be one that sells antique, unique and unconventional household items, jewelry and clothing and maybe a bit of vintage pieces; a bit of history in an item can never hurt.
If you could change one thing about your closet, what would it be?
Oh this is easy, if there is one thing I could change about my closet is that I wish it was bigger, however with regards to what is inside my closet I would have to say more color would always work for me, somehow I have a lot of black, I think that has happened over the years with what I have accumulated but now I am on a mission of trying to replace my black with fun, sexy color pieces.
Survival of the fittest: What is one item in your closet that you will never get rid of?
Well of course it is the little black dress; even though I am trying to add more color to my wardrobe my little black dress is my most convenient piece. Just last night I designed a little black dress for a client. It is a dress that can be worn twice or even three times in one week, casually, formally or even for a night out with the girls.
If you were given the opportunity to have a famous designer revamp your entire wardrobe, who would you choose?
Oh this is a tough question since I have a great appreciation for all fashion designers but to revamp my wardrobe I would have to choose Diane Von Furstenberg. I love her signature prints and the glamorous and sexy twists she puts into her elegant dresses and skirts.
Name an actor/singer/celebrity whose wardrobe you admire the most.
Hands down Rihanna! Not only is she from my home country Barbados but I admire and adore her sense of style. Some days she may be seen wearing a casual, rocked out outfit looking all cool and comfortable while other days she may be seen wearing a classic elegant piece looking simply stunning. I like that she keeps her looks versatile, practical and all the while simply stunning; I simply love her style.
What are your best and worst fashion purchases?
My best fashion purchases are always my practical and convenient ones which end up being my Calvin Klein and Levi’s jeans. They truly serve their purpose on my busy days and of course my little black dress; I do not know what I would do without it.
Who makes your favorite pair of jeans? Shoes? Dress or Suit?
My favorite jeans are my Levi’s; I wear them to no end and they still fit me perfectly. For favorite shoes I would have to say Jimmy Choo, every collection leaves my mouth watering and with regards to dresses I love my ASMI pieces, they make me feel elegant, sexy, comfortable and simply beautiful.
If you had to describe your personal style in one word, what would it be?
I would have to say….elegant.
If you could bring back any fashion trend, what would it be?
If I could bring back any fashion trend it would have to be the 1970s era in the time of studio 54. The glitz, glamour, sparkle and shine leave in awe every time I review the fashion of that era.
If we took a peek inside your personal closet, what would we find?
If you peeked into my closet you would find colorful prints, feathered and sequin dresses, a few sequin bottoms and tops, the rows of black that I have managed to accumulate and heels to match the feathers, sequins and colors (yes, shoes are my weakness). For my busy days when I am running from fabric store to fabric store you will find my jeans, leggings, even more jeans and my row of pumps for comfort.
